The long history of the D'Urso family begins in 1896 with the birth of D'Urso Giuseppe Cataldo one of 9 brothers and sisters. Giuseppe began at the age of 18-20 to take plots of olive groves as sharecroppers and then the harvest took him to other small mills for the transformation and production of oil which, once obtained, was placed around the markets of the cities of Brindisi and Taranto to sell extra virgin olive oil to the city populations of the time.
Giuseppe D'Urso then began to undertake the oil mill business on his own with the means of the time. He began in 1935 in a room of the Hypogeum Oil Mill together with his sons Domenico, Giuseppe, Cosimo and Giovanni.
The Founder Giuseppe, therefore, continued his work with the first of the three children described above, while Giovanni took the road of catering. Over the years, and after the death of the Founder Giuseppe, the children initially began to work together in the oil mill, then gave life to another activity such as the transformation of stone into sand for construction, as well as the trade of other products related to the construction activity. After several years of working together, they separated and each of them formed their own oil mill, starting in 1953 everyone began to work on their own.
In 1953 Domenico began his oil mill business with a small plant located in the room below his current home in the town. After a few years, Domenico had the idea of combining the transformation of the olives with that of the transformation of wine grapes.
Thus, expanding the premises of the oil mill, he built a small cellar next to it with a deposit for 5,000 quintals of wines. In a few years Domenico saw an increase in the activity of transforming the grapes, thus becoming the main activity. During the years that followed Domenico increasingly expanded his stocks and wine production capacity. Arrived at the end of the 90s and precisely in 1996 Domenico bought lots in the current artisan area of Villa Castelli to further expand his wine production, not forgetting however the oil mill activity. In fact, with the creation of the new processing plant for both grapes and olives, an industrial factory was created that could satisfy the growing requests that our company received.
From February 1997 Domenico together with his two sons Giuseppe and Giovanni gave life to the D'Urso Domenico & Figli S.r.l. with Sole Director Domenico. With this creation of the Company, the competencies within the same company began to be distributed and, in doing so, there was more competitiveness and the strengthening of production capacity, especially of the wines, which were all destined for Northern Italy.
In the year 2022 Giovanni began to participate in prestigious international competitions always at an international level to have the wines they produce tested, and the results were very gratifying as the Primitivo and the Negroamaro as well as the Rosso Puglia obtained medals of gold, which means that they were also very well appreciated by the various juries that composed the awarding of the aforementioned wines, as well as other awards that received silver medals and bronze medals. This was once again an incentive to make their wines even more known to a wider audience of nations. The activity today is always centered on an industrial nature where 90% of the wines are sold abroad and are transported by container and then embarked on ships for their final destination. Then the company also has a sales point in the same cellar where you can go and buy the wines that you see on the company website directly from the cellar, and finally now in 2023 on the same site in the Shop area you can also buy them online.
Therefore, today the D'Urso Family aims for the sale of its products especially in emerging markets such as China and Russia, where in this last year of production it can be said that 90% of the turnover has been achieved thanks to these sales in China where our wines get a good result. We always update the site called www.cantinedurso.com where many people visit and ask us for info on the costs and characteristics of our wines. The company still wants to grow and to do if there will be the possibility to continue investing in technology and new products typical of our wonderful "Salento".
